2023 ELECTION WOMEN’S PARTICIPATION AND THE CALL FOR INCLUSIVITY IN GOVERNANCE

In light of the recent Nigerian elections in 2023, it is critical to emphasize the necessity of including women in all branches of government. About half of the population are women, and it is essential to the growth of our country that they participate in the democratic process. There is still a long way to go before women are fully represented in the political sphere, even though we have made strides in recent years to increase the participation of women in politics. The 2023 elections offered a chance to address this problem, and we are happy to report that more women ran for office than in previous elections

However, there were still significant challenges faced by women candidates such as intimidation and violence, as well as social and cultural hurdles that prevent women from entering politics, which are major obstacles that women candidates must overcome. While acknowledging that there is still much work to be done, we must acknowledge the progress that has already been made. We think that more effective government and policies that benefit all citizens will result from a political process that is inclusive and takes into account the viewpoints and experiences of women. It is time to remove the last remaining obstacles standing in the way of women’s full political participation and ensure that their opinions are heard.

From candidate nomination to election day, GSAI proposes that a high priority be placed on the participation of women in politics and high-ranking government positions. This entails fostering a supportive climate for female candidates, offering resources and logistical assistance, and removing social and cultural barriers that prohibit women from fully participating in politics. Most importantly, we Propose that Political parties must work with gender advocates to analyze action plans to find areas where people of different genders have disproportionate levels of access or potential benefit, and then use that analysis to mainstream gender considerations. Proactively invite and positively encourage women’s organizations, gender networks, and leaders to participate in multi-stakeholder forums. Think about a new promise that leverages open government to fill a particular gap in the services or policy requirements for women and girls.

Better governance and policies that are beneficial to all citizens will result from a political process that is inclusive and integrates the viewpoints and experiences of women. It is time to remove the last remaining obstacles standing in the way of women’s full political participation and ensure that their opinions are heard.

All Nigerians are urged to encourage women’s participation in the electoral process and to actively work towards establishing a society in which women are fully represented in all aspects of life. We now have the chance to create a better Nigeria in which everyone, regardless of gender, has an equal opportunity to contribute to the expansion and advancement of our country.

Thank you.
